About this planner
THE CHEERFUL KITCHEN — Dinner should not feel like admin.
Somewhere along the way, feeding ourselves turned into a chore to be optimised. A logistics problem. A thing to get on top of.
And so meal planners became spreadsheets with nicer fonts — efficient, joyless, and quietly implying that the goal is to spend as little of yourself on dinner as humanly possible.
But you eat roughly a thousand dinners a year. That is far too many to resent.
THE IDEA AT THE HEART OF IT
A week built entirely out of sensible, efficient dinners is a week you will abandon by Thursday.
So on every single weekly plan there is a gold box, and it says: "The one I'm looking forward to."
You fill that in first — and then you build the rest of the week around it.
That isn't decoration. One meal you actually want is what carries the other six, and it is the cheapest structural improvement you can make to a meal plan. Joy is the mechanism here, not the garnish.
WHAT'S INSIDE — 120 hyperlinked pages
PART ONE · BEFORE YOU BEGIN (filled in once — twenty minutes, then never again) Your Repertoire · The Staples · Anchor Nights · Allergies & Needs · and The Cheerful Rules
THE CHEERFUL RULES (page 11 — the heart of the book) ① Cook one thing a week you actually want to ② Feed people — don't just feed yourself. The same food, eaten with somebody, is a different meal. ③ Buy one thing you don't need. Every shop. ④ A bad week is a bad week, not a verdict. Toast for dinner three nights running happens to everyone — including people who write meal planners. ⑤ Finish the week, don't grade it.
PART TWO · THE WEEKS 26 weekly spreads — half a year of dinners. Every week is a pair: the plan (with its gold box) and the grocery list that comes out of it. The two pages cross-link to each other, and every list taps straight through to your staples check.
PART THREE · THE SHOP 20 grocery lists — and every one of them has a gold box for one thing you don't need. The good cheese. The proper butter. The nice chilli oil. It is the cheapest joy on offer anywhere, and you have permission.
PART FOUR · THE KITCHEN 24 recipe cards, each with a line for who I'd cook this for.
THE WORLD KITCHEN — three complete recipes, written out in full: ★ JOLLOF RICE (Nigeria & Ghana) — the most argued-about dish on earth. Fry the purée until it darkens; then, once the lid is on, never stir it. The bit that catches on the bottom is the most prized part of the pot, and people will fight over it. ★ PIEROGI (Poland) — a fiddly job for one person and a genuinely lovely one for three. Make them with company: the afternoon is the recipe. ★ CEVICHE (Peru) — raw fish cured in nothing but lime, chilli and salt, with sweet potato and corn.
Metric and imperial throughout.
UNDATED — start any week, skip a fortnight, come back in the autumn. Nothing expires.
